Ever wonder what it’s like to be an Olympian? Here’s your chance to try out the amazing sport of curling!

Seattle’s own Granite Curling Club invites Goodtimes families to step onto the ice, grab a stone and broom, and learn how to curl. This event was inspired by one of our own camp families, who have been members of the club for years. Come join them in their shared love of curling.

What happens at a curling event?

Generally you will be on the ice for 2-3 hours.  This includes instruction and short games. The process goes something like this:

  • You arrive and we ensure that your waiver is in order.

  • We clean your shoes and fit rubber grippers on them to protect our ice surface and to help you walk on the ice.

  • Your instructors lead you through some stretches, and will discuss safety guidelines and information about the game.

  • Small groups of people go out on the ice for curling instruction. Each group will be assigned 1-2 experienced curlers who will teach you how to deliver rocks, about sweeping, and about basic game strategy.

  • Once your session is done, you can visit upstairs for refreshments and to socialize. Or, you can go back on the ice and play more! You can form up teams to play organized games against each other.  Kids vs. kids, families vs. families. You might even have the chance to play against Goodtimes staff, or challenge yourself against our club’s more experienced curlers.

What to wear?

  • Wear loose fitting pants like sweatpants or yoga pants - not jeans - and a sweatshirt or jacket.

  • You should dress in layers - it can be chilly on the ice, but you warm up quickly once you start playing and sweeping.

  • Wear clean flat-soled comfortable shoes. (Tennis shoes or sneakers work best. Running shoes that are wide work less well.)

  • All children under the age of 13 must bring and wear a helmet while on the ice at all times.

    • Properly fitting bicycle, skateboard, and ski/snowboard helmets are examples of typically acceptable options.  There are no exceptions to this rule and the club cannot guarantee that there will be helmets to borrow.  You must remember to bring your own!
